A game industry expert for your case.
I’ve spent 25+ years making games: designing them, writing their code, running teams, and shipping 35+ titles at studios like Westwood, Electronic Arts and Microsoft’s World’s Edge. Attorneys bring me in to explain how the games industry really works, in plain language a judge or jury can follow.
What I’ve done
- Expert reports. Retained as a games-industry expert in federal copyright litigation, writing a report on industry norms and practices.
- Rebuttals. Analyzed the opposing side’s expert reports in a video game lawsuit and wrote the rebuttal.
Both cases are ongoing, so I don’t name them here.
Where I can help
How games get made
Who does what on a team, how design, art, code and production fit together, how long things really take, and what a credit actually means.
Game design and genre conventions
What’s standard in a genre and what’s original. I’ve designed RTS, MOBA, shooter, battle royale and VR games, and was early to both the MOBA and the shooter–MOBA hybrid.
Live service and free-to-play
Game economies, monetization, virtual items, and how players and publishers treat them. I took a free-to-play shooter past 3 million players.
Player-made content and platforms
Maps, mods and creator islands: how they get built, how platforms handle them, and what the industry expects of the people who make them.
Publishing and porting
Publisher and developer relationships, porting to consoles, and how a game moves from studio to storefront. I ran tinyBuild’s porting studio.
Game AI and AI tools
I’ve written shipped game AI since Command & Conquer, and I build AI workflows for game teams today.
